The Paparoa Track is a 55.7 km dual-use trail connecting Blackball to Punakaiki. Designed to DOC Great Walk standards and classified as Advanced: Grade 4 for mountain biking, the track features a well-formed surface, regular maintenance, and multiple swing and suspension bridges
While the trail can be accessed from either end, it is most logically ridden from Blackball to Punakaiki, beginning with an 800m climb onto the tops, followed by a gradual, undulating descent to the coast
For some riders, the track offers a fast-paced, single-day challenge, while others may opt for a more relaxed two-day journey with an overnight stay. Walkers are more likely to complete the track over three days with two nights on the trail
The Pike 29 Memorial Track branches off from the main route, dropping 10.8 km from the ridge tops into the Pike River headwaters, leading to the memorial site honoring the 29 miners who lost their lives in the 2010 mine explosion. This section can be completed as a return hike to the ridge, an alternative starting point for the Paparoa Track, or part of a loop trip with a shuttle or ride back to Blackball

Begin your adventure with a scenic boat journey through the breathtaking Marlborough Sounds, arriving at Ship Cove, the start of this 73.5 km trail is mostly Grade 3, with some technical Grade 4 sections
